How to Help Yourself Wake and Be Ready for the Day
You can't sleep in before boot camp. Here's what actually works instead.
Most "how to wake up energized" advice assumes you can adjust your schedule around your body. Sleep when you're tired. Wake up naturally. Get sunlight whenever you want.
You can't do any of that. You have a 5am alarm and a group waiting for you.
So here are four things that work inside that constraint — not despite it.
1. Same wake time, every day, including Saturday
Your body doesn't care what day it is. It cares whether your wake time is predictable. Sleeping in on weekends and waking at 5am on weekdays is the single biggest reason Monday feels brutal — you're not tired from the weekend, you're jet-lagged from it.
Pick one wake time. Use it seven days a week, even on rest days. Your Monday alarm will stop feeling like a crime.
2. Lights on the second the alarm goes off
You're not waking up to sunlight. You're waking up in the dark. That means your body has no signal that it's morning until you create one.
Turn on every light in the room the moment you're up. Don't ease into it. A bright room in the first five minutes tells your brain to stop producing the hormones that keep you sleepy — a dim room tells it to keep going.
3. Ditch the blaring alarm
A jarring alarm spikes your stress hormones the second you wake up. That spike doesn't just make the first minute worse — it can make it harder to fall asleep well the next night, which stacks the fatigue.
Switch to a gradual or gentle-tone alarm. It's a five-minute setup, one time, and it removes a source of fatigue you didn't know you were creating for yourself.
4. Skip the wine the night before
This one's not about willpower. Alcohol makes you fall asleep faster but wrecks the deep sleep your body actually needs to recover. You can sleep eight hours after a few drinks and still feel like you got four.
If you have an early session, treat the night before like it matters as much as the session itself — because it does.
None of this requires more sleep, a supplement, or a new morning routine. It requires four small swaps and showing up.
One more thing before you head to class: drink a glass of water while you're getting ready. You haven't had fluids in 7-8 hours, and showing up already dehydrated makes an early session harder than it needs to be. It's a small thing, but it's free, and it's already in your hand while you're brushing your teeth anyway.
